About this tool

Enter a whole-yen amount and tax rate to calculate the net price, tax, and gross price. Rounding applies to the calculated tax when adding tax, and to the calculated net price when extracting tax. Choose round down, nearest, or up.

For tax-exclusive input, tax is net amount times the rate and is added to the net amount. For tax-inclusive input, net amount is gross divided by one plus the rate.

Rounding applies to calculated tax when adding tax and to calculated net price when extracting tax. Down, nearest, and up can differ by a minor currency unit.

Rounding a combined invoice can differ from rounding each item separately. Match the seller's tax categories and rounding unit when reconciling a receipt.

FAQ
When does the 8% rate apply?
The reduced 8% rate covers food and non-alcoholic drinks for takeaway, and newspapers issued at least twice a week. Everything else is 10%. Eating in at a restaurant is 10%; the same item taken away is 8%.
How are fractions of a yen handled?
No single method is mandated. A business may round down, round up, or round to nearest. Retailers most often round down.
How do I get the pre-tax price from a tax-included price?
Divide by 1.1 (or 1.08 for the reduced rate) and drop the fraction. The tax is then the difference between the two figures.
Must prices be shown including tax?
Prices shown to consumers must include tax. Business-to-business quotes are often shown excluding tax.
